    Western Sydney Business Connection's last lunch of the year gave business people a chance to network before the start of another year as well as raise money for Northcott Disability Services.

    Held at Oatlands House in Dundas on Wednesday, the business leader lunch featured popular Northcott ambassadors Ben Keyte and Shirley Wong who both spoke of how Northcott had helped their lives.

    Both wheelchair bound and Ms Wong communicating via an iPad voice, the young ambassadors told of the support Northcott had given them.

    "If not for Northcott, I, we would not be talking to you today," Mr Keyte told the audience.

    Both he and Ms Wong spoke of the work Northcott does in supporting people with disabilities to lead full lives.

    Mr Keyte gave an impressive account of his active life, in the performing arts as well as wheelchair soccer with the Wanderers.

    More than $4000 was raised through a live and silent auction and a raffle.

    With North West Rail Link construction work set to increase in 2014, Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne has urged residents and businesses around the station sites to get North West Rail ready.

    The NSW Government will begin excavation work at various station sites in 2014. The excavation at Norwest will require the closure of the western access to Brookhollow Avenue, Baulkham Hills  (opposite Norwest Marketown) on Norwest Boulevarde from February 2014 to June 2014.

    The work will also require additional No Stopping signs to be installed along sections of Brookhollow Avenue.

    Access to Brookhollow Avenue will still be available through the eastern intersection of Norwest Boulevarde and Brookhollow Avenue (near the Atlas building).

    During that period, additional travel time may be required for those using Norwest Boulevarde.

    Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne said that residents and businesses may have to re-think their daily routine during the construction phase.

    “We’ve wanted the North West Rail Link for a very long time and construction won’t happen overnight,” Dr Byrne said.

    “Businesses may look at staggering work hours to skip the congestion and walking around Norwest Business Park rather than driving when possible.”

    “Council is working with the NSW Government and Transport for NSW to keep residents well informed and make the process as smooth as possible.”

    Mayor Byrne said that North West Rail Link early works had already begun across the Sydney Hills, and it was a good sign that  progress is being made.

    “We’ve seen buildings being demolished at station sites like Bella Vista, Norwest and Showground as well as the closure of Arthur Whitling Park at Castle Hill.”

    “While this may look a little bit confronting, I ask everyone to keep their eye on the big picture. Getting around The Hills and greater Sydney will be far easier once the rail link is up and running.”

    "Some of the kids we have in our programs have never owned a Rugby League jersey. It will be a great reward." Liddiard said.


    Liddiard said the Indigenous players at the Panthers are role models in a lot of Country areas. "We use Rugby League players as role models to encourage Indigenous kids that have come out of the Juvenile Justice system to stay out of trouble."

    The Australian Privacy Act is set to change in March 2014, and the new legislation has significant implications for Australian business.

    To help organisations prepare for these changes, Moore Stephens Melbourne recently hosted a privacy law seminar with Australian Information Commissioner, Professor John McMillan AO, as speaker. Professor McMillan talked through the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner’s new Australian Privacy Principles, or APPs, to help businesses understand and explore the challenges they present.

    What are the implications for business?

    1. The new regulations are enforceable

    The OAIC has extended powers to enforce Australian privacy law. The Commissioner explained that the new regulations represent “a stronger, hard-edged, coercive regime, but the emphasis is still on conciliation.”

    From March 2014, the OAIC will have the power to initiative investigations itself, and as a result of a consumer complaint. If conciliation isn’t possible, the OAIC will be able to have organisations make an undertaking to improve their systems for collecting, storing and using personal information. If they don’t, the OAIC will be able to pursue legal action and seek financial penalties from those organisations.

    Case study: Penalties for Google

    Google was fined in Spain and France for downloading individuals’ personal data from unsecured wifi networks through its Street View service, while United States regulators required it to make an undertaking about its conduct over the ensuing two years. The new Australian laws give the OAIC extended powers to apply similar penalties to organisations operating here.

    2. Businesses need to obtain consentundefinedand abide by it

    Businesses may only use personally identifiable information for the purposes approved by the individual who provided it.

    Case study: Preempting additional uses

    Payroll can’t share employees’ bank details with accounts payable for reimbursement purposes. One solution is to obtain the sharing consent required by the organisation at the point of data collection.

    “The Principles also require you to tell people how they'll be adversely affected if they don't consent to data sharing,” the Commissioner said.

    3. The law isn’t retrospective, but it does apply to the data you’ve already collected

    The new laws don’t apply to the collection of data in the past. But they do apply to the way you store, secure, and use that data now and in the future. The regulations also require you to keep it up to date and complete.

    Case study: Making staff information available to clients

    A global business presenting personal information on staff members to potential clients may need to obtain consent from staff members to reuse their personal (or profile) information for this purpose, even if that information was collected before the new laws come into effect, or the staff members are located overseas.

    4. Emerging technologies present fresh compliance challenges

    New technologies present new hurdles for regional or national legislation like the APPs.

    Case study: DestinationundefinedCloud

    Attendees flagged that they might store data in cloud services to share with colleagues, but that they don’t have any idea where the service is hosted or the data is stored.

    “The Australian privacy laws follow the information wherever it goes,” the Commissioner said.

    “If you're collecting personal information in Australia and sending it overseas, you're subject to the Australian Privacy Act wherever you send that information, unless the country you send it to has a comparable law for privacy.”

    He commented that the United States, for example, does not have a comparable law. But he also explained that the Australian laws apply to all Australian businesses with a turnover of 3 million or more, so Australian-based cloud service providers are required to abide by the new laws, too.

    What can you do?

    Businesses should reassess their existing privacy policies, procedures and systems to ensure they’re adequate to meet the new changes.

    “You have to get on top of the privacy principles,” the Commissioner said. “Do a privacy impact assessment.”

    He suggested business focus on questions including:

    §  What is the personal information on our systems?

    §  Can we identify it?

    §  How's it being used and stored?

    §  Who are we giving it to?

    “It's not simple,” he added, “but it can be straightforward.”

    Legislative implications for individuals

    §  The seminar also highlighted some of the ways the new legislation will affect individuals.

    §  Be aware that your personal information can be used for purposes beyond those to which you’ve consented, so long as it’s de-identified.

    §  Even something as simple as an email address may be personally identifying, although generic email addresses usually aren’t personally identifying.

    §  You are permitted by the new laws to interact with organisations anonymously or under a pseudonym as far as is practical.

    If an associate gives you their business card, they’re obviously consenting to you having that information. But they’re not consenting to you aggregating that information and selling the database to others, for example.

    Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne congratulated JCME in a speech following Freddy’s welcome and introduction of the team.

    “This team achieved in less than three months unimaginable success. Apart from winning the trust of a few clients that we are honoured to have here tonight, they were blessed with the winning of a 2-year, extendable to three, tender contract for a NSW government department. This is an opportunity that big marketing sharks dream to win. This company achieved it after a few weeks of its birth,” said Freddy.

    Following speeches, there was a heart-pumping performance by the String Angels. The performers interacted with the audience through a violin-playing competition between Freddy Mikhael, Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne and Jim Taggart of the Taggart Group, which was amusing to all.

    Attendees included Federal member Alex Hawke, State members David Elliott, Dr Geoff Lee, Ray Williams, local councillors, WSBC General Manager Michael Sugg, ResMed, PricewaterhouseCoopers Australia, 3M, CommScope, Commonwealth Bank and local businesses.
